MADAM MAYOR
How I Learned to Love Government
and Hate Politics
in Ten Intriguing Years
by Marcy Meffert

After 20 years as a military wife, mother of five, and community volunteer, Marcy Meffert retired from full-time homemaking in 1974 to begin a new career – first as a free-lance writer and editor, then in 1994 in what she calls the ultimate volunteer job of serving on the Leon Valley, Texas, City Council. She served four years as a councilmember and six as mayor.

On behalf of her city she was active on regional and state levels in leadership positions, including chairman of the Greater Bexar County Council of Cities, chairman of the Alamo Area Council of Governments, and president of the Texas Municipal League Region 7.  In 2004, she retired from public service to write this book, which she hopes will encourage more people to get seriously involved in government as candidates, election workers, and/or at the very least, as voters. She writes with an inimitable sense of humor and shows the human side of politics at the grassroots level.

Useful  Website and Service

Here is a website and service I think you will enjoy and use. Please go to their website and take a look. So far this service is free. Jott.com . In short, you use your telephone to leave messages to yourself. It is great when you're sitting in your doctor's office and you come up with a great idea. You call your Jott and leave a message. It is transcribed and then sent to you in an email message. So far this has been pretty accurate. The speech to text engine in the program is amazing.

If you have a great site that you would like to share with your fellow Chamber members, please send a message to Unique Communications. I will then post it for the group.

"ICE"

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know whom to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) Campaign

The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" (In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there were a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as "ICE."

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!

Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!

ICE will speak for you when
you are not able to.

Brought to you by Unique Communications.
